Everything is taken inside the app, so nothing lands in your camera roll. Videos run up to two minutes.
The Surfaced kaiako app on an iPhone, in Note mode: Pania’s note about Ihaia at the water trough written out on the page, Ihaia’s name ticked, and a button that says Send to Ihaia.
Say it. It stays on the phone.
Hold to talk and your words are written on the phone, in New Zealand English, with te reo kept as te reo. The recording never leaves the phone.
You say who it is for.
Tap the tamariki in it, or send it to a room or the whole centre. Nothing is sent until you do.
- Ihaia’s name, ticked, with the kiwi after it.
Named by your own tap. The kiwi is yours.
- Isla’s name, not ticked.
Not in this one.
Face matching on the phone can suggest a name, and tick one it is sure of, but only for tamariki whose whānau said yes. Nothing is sent until you press Send, and you can untick any name. Naming by hand always works.
Made for a real day.
No signal?
Moments wait in the outbox and send when the phone is back online, even in the background.
Children’s work
Scan a drawing or painting and it goes in as Artwork. Any photo can be marked as Artwork too.
A shared phone
Unlock with your 4-digit PIN, or Face ID when the phone is yours alone. Switch kaiako without signing out.
Locked when idle
The app locks itself when idle and blocks screenshots by default. During the pilot, a kaiako can allow them on their phone for an hour, after which it switches itself off.
Drafts wait for you on the web.
Read each draft beside your words, change what you like, and approve it when it’s right.
