A Learning Story, as whānau read it.

The funnel fixes it

IhaiaKōtare roomPania · Thu 15 Oct, 9:14 am

Ihaia, this morning at the water trough you poured from the big jug into the skinny bottle, and the water went everywhere. “Too much, it’s all spilling,” you said. So you fetched the funnel from the shelf, set it in the bottle and tried again. “Ka pai, it goes in the hole now.”

After kai you went straight back and did it five more times, checking the bottle every time. You found a problem, chose a tool to fix it, then tested it again and again.

Tomorrow I’ll put out more funnels, so you can keep finding out how they work.

Every sentence of the story itself has to cite the evidence it came from, or Surfaced rejects the draft before anyone sees it.

Ihaia

Ihaia was at the water trough most of the morning. He kept pouring the big jug into the skinny bottle and it went everywhere, and he said “too much, it’s all spilling”. Then he went and got the funnel off the shelf, put it in the bottle and tried again. “Ka pai, it goes in the hole now.” After kai he went straight back and did it five more times, checking the bottle every time. Might put more funnels out tomorrow.

On the review page, choosing a sentence lights up the words it came from.

Te Whāriki links you confirm.

Claude suggests up to four links, each with its reason. They arrive ticked and marked as suggestions; a kaiako unticks any that don’t fit, and only the links left ticked are kept.

The Te Whāriki list on the review page: three links Claude suggested for Ihaia’s story, each with its reason. Two are ticked; the third, Mana reo, is unticked.

Claude suggested three links for Ihaia’s story. Pania kept two.

Change any sentence yourself. Ask Claude for a rewrite in your own words, like ‘shorter, and more about the water’, or ask for a careful rewrite from a stronger model.

What the AI receives.

Your words, the child’s first name and age band, and what your centre has recorded. Never a photo, a video or a recording, and nothing at all without the whānau’s yes.

Questions kaiako ask.

Will it make things up?
Every sentence of a story’s narrative has to cite what you captured, or the draft is rejected. You still read every draft before whānau see it.
Can whānau tell the AI helped?
Yes. A published draft is labelled ‘AI-assisted · reviewed by a kaiako’.
What if a family says no to AI?
Then Claude drafts nothing for a moment their child is in, and you write it yourself.
